John 2:1-12 Devo – Day 2

Hearing God’s Voice from His Word

James 4:8 says, “Come near to God and he will come near to you.”
Take a moment and turn your attention to God. Tell God that you desire to trust and obey Him. Ask God to speak to you from His word.

Psalm of the Day

Psalm 9:1-2
I will thank the Lord with all my heart;
I will declare all your wondrous works.
2 I will rejoice and boast about you;
I will sing about your name, Most High.
Read the Entire Psalm

“I will” – Join David in the actions that he commits to carry out. He says he will thank, declare, rejoice, boast, and sing. You may not consider yourself a singer, but you can give thanks. You can boast about what God has done. He has made you. He has kept you. If you have trusted Christ he has rescued you. Rejoice in God he has done wondrous works.

Scripture Reading
John 2:1-12 – English Standard Version
The Wedding at Cana

2 On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. 3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

6 Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it. 9 When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.” 11 This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.

12 After this he went down to Capernaum, with his mother and his brothers and his disciples, and they stayed there for a few days.

Living as God’s People by applying the Bible

Scripture Reflection from the Sermon

As you read Scripture, you must understand that it is “God-breathed.” It is infallible (unable to make a mistake) and inerrant (without actual error). It is also a work of men who were “moved by the Holy Spirit” to write God’s word. God used their personalities and backgrounds to write the books of the Bible. It is a book that is at the same time fully divine and fully human. There is no contradiction there. As you read a book like the gospel of John, you must remember that John, guided by the Holy Spirit, selected from the vast amount of available material to give us his book. In addition, the way in which he put the material together was full of both human and divine intention; there is nothing random there. So, as we read the gospel of John the next few months, ask questions both of content and of how he has organized the gospel. Ask “Why is he including that?” “Why did he put that there?” “Why did he say it like that?” You don’t need to be a biblical expert to ask good questions. Start with a conviction that this is the Word of the Lord. Then have a heart that is ready to hear and respond to God’s word. Now, ask good questions and grow in understanding!
