Hearing God’s Voice from His Word
James 4:8 says, “Come near to God and he will come near to you.”
Take a moment and turn your attention to God. Tell God that you desire to trust and obey Him. Ask God to speak to you from His word.

Psalm 7:10-13 My shield is God Most High, who saves the upright in heart.
11 God is a righteous judge, a God who displays his wrath every day.
12 If he does not relent, he will sharpen his sword; he will bend and string his bow.
13 He has prepared his deadly weapons; he makes ready his flaming arrows.

Praise God that He is a righteous judge. Praise God that He can also relent and show mercy.
Praise God because He saves. Praise God because He can protect.

1 I wait quietly before God,
for my victory comes from him.
2 He alone is my rock and my salvation,

3 So many enemies against one man—

Having God’s Ear through Prayer
- Express thanksgiving to God.
- Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal sin to you.
- Confess your sin to Him and receive forgiveness.
(1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sin He is faithful and just and will forgive our sins.”) - Bring your personal requests to God.
(Psalm 62:8 “Pour out your heart before God”) - Pray for someone in your small group.
- Join with others from River and pray for those who do not know God. Ask God to help you see the lost people around you and have compassion for them. Ask God for opportunities to build trust. Ask God to give you opportunity to have gospel conversations.

Scripture Reflection from the Sermon
David began his song by stating his position. Then he described the attack he was facing. He was facing verbal attack by his son. After describing the attack, David then repeats what he says in the first section. He says “Rest soul in God alone.” He is bossing his soul around. Yes he feels under attack. Yes he feels the relational trauma of his son wanting to steal the kingdom but David tells his soul to rest. He also tells himself to depend on God not just for his salvation but for his glory. David is expecting God to defend His honor. God is David’s strong rock, whether David feels it or not. David will make God his resting place.
Application: Talk to yourself now. You might start by expressing to God how you feel. If you feel happy and content, tell God. If you feel sad or concerned, tell God. Now express to yourself what is true regardless of how you feel.
