Download Week 6 Devotional

I. Prayer to enter the Lord’s presence:

Be still for a moment. “Lord, I give the day that is now past to you.  It is yours.  I give the day that is to come to you; help me to see where you are working and to join you there.  Speak to me during these moments.  I commit them and myself to you.”

 II. Prayer of Confession:

“Lord, you are faithful to forgive me and cleanse me of my sin when I confess it to you.  I confess my sin(s) of ______________.  Thank you for forgiveness.” (1 John 1:9)

III. Prayer of Thanksgiving:

Choose to be thankful, speak out loud of what God has done.
“Thank you, Father, for _________________.  Fill my heart and my mouth with gratitude throughout this day.”

IV. Scripture Reflection

Read:

Genesis 12:1   The LORD had said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you.  2 “I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.  3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”

Ruth 4:18-21 This, then, is the family line of Perez: Perez was the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram, Ram the father of Amminadab,  Amminadab the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon, Salmon the father of Boaz, Boaz the father of Obed, 22 Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of David.

Matthew 1:17   Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ.

Reflect:

There are hundreds of years from Abraham to Ruth and from Ruth to Jesus.  All those years are connected by the promise and providence of God. So many years and days of individual people living their lives.  You can quickly read of the generations but keep in mind that those individuals who made up those generations lived their lives a year, a day, a minute, a second at a time just like you do.  You can see God is at work when you read of the movements in a single glance but it is much more difficult to do so when you live in the minutes. Remember, for God to work his will in the large movements he must do so in the minutes as well.

Respond:

Today, whatever the minutes consist of, choose to consider the God of the movements.  This is a mental exercise with life shaping potential if you practice it often. Close your eyes and see with your imagination God speaking to Abraham, then Ruth weeping over a dead husband and choosing to go with Naomi, see the Savior of the world being born. These movements of God were made of moments of human decisions. Now open your eyes and live today in the minutes with a vision of the God of the movements.

V. Prayer for others:

Pray specifically for the concerns of your life and the lives of others.

VI. Prayer of commitment:

Lord God, I commit to love you with all my heart and with all my soul and with all my strength and with all my mind and to love my neighbor as myself.  Empower me today to love you and others with everything that I am.”  (Luke 10:27)

This Month’s Scripture Memory:

Psalm 23:1-6
The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
