1 Timothy 6:17-21 Discussion Guide

1 Timothy 6:17–21 – Give and Guard

OPENING PRAYER: Lord, open our eyes so that we may contemplate wondrous things from your Word. Help us not just hear it, but respond to it. Shape our hearts to trust you, to live generously, and to hold firmly to your truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

INTRO: Paul closes his letter to Timothy with urgency and clarity. These final words are not random—they are focused, practical, and aimed at shaping how the church lives. He gives two clear gospel imperatives: Give and Guard. For those who are “rich in this present age,” Paul calls for humility, right hope, and generosity. And for Timothy—and the whole church—he gives a final charge to guard what has been entrusted to them. These commands are not opposed to one another. They are meant to be held together—forming a people with soft hearts and stiff minds.

MAIN POINT:
The gospel calls us to live with soft hearts and stiff minds—giving generously while guarding the truth faithfully.

SCRIPTURE-DRIVEN DISCUSSION
Have someone read 1 Timothy 6:17–21 aloud together. Take a few minutes to reflect—what stood out to you from the passage or from the sermon?
Additional references from the sermon include Proverbs 23:4–5, Hebrews 13:8, Matthew 6:33, and Matthew 28:18–20.

Q1: Where is your hope really resting? (1 Timothy 6:17)
Reminder: Don’t set your hope on the uncertainty of riches… but on God.
– What are you most tempted to rely on for security right now?
– How can you tell when something good has become a false foundation?
– What would it look like this week to actively place your hope in God instead?

Q2: What does it look like to truly “give”? (1 Timothy 6:18)
Reminder: Generosity of heart and hand… not just money, but your life.
– When you think about generosity, do you think more about money or your whole life? Why?
– Where might God be inviting you to be more open-handed—with your time, relationships, or resources?
– Who is someone you could intentionally invest in this week?

Q3: Are you experiencing what is “truly life”? (1 Timothy 6:19)
Reminder: It’s possible to be secure in Christ but miss the fullness because we’re too tied to this world.
– What are you holding onto that might be keeping you from experiencing deeper life in Christ?
– When have you seen obedience lead to greater joy than comfort?
– What is one step you can take this week to pursue eternal things over temporary ones?

Q4: What does it look like for you to “guard the deposit”? (1 Timothy 6:20–21)
Reminder: Anyone who takes seriously the call to make disciples will need to guard the truth.
– Where are you most exposed to distorted or shallow ideas about truth?
– How are you growing in knowing God’s Word so you can recognize what’s true?
– In what relationships or situations might God be calling you to stand firm in truth—with love?

LET’S REMEMBER:
The gospel shapes both our hearts and our minds. We are not called to choose between generosity and truth, but to hold them together. It is possible to give without guarding—and drift. It is possible to guard without giving—and grow cold. But in Christ, we are called to both: to live open-handed with what we have and firm-handed with what we believe. This is where we begin to experience what is truly life.

FINAL APPLICATION
Since what we’ve discussed is true and relevant, where are you naturally inclined—and where do you need to grow?
– Do you tend to give easily but struggle to guard truth when it’s uncomfortable?
– Or do you tend to guard truth well but struggle to love people with generosity and warmth?

Example: You might need to step into a hard conversation and speak truth clearly (guard), or you might need to open your home, your time, or your resources to someone (give).

Ask the Lord to help you grow in both—a soft heart and a stiff mind.

CLOSING PRAYER:
Lord, thank you that you are our true and lasting hope. Help us not to trust in what is uncertain, but in you. Shape us into people who give freely and guard faithfully. Give us soft hearts toward people and firm conviction in your truth. Teach us to live this out with wisdom, courage, and love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
