1 Tim. 4:11-16 Discussion Guide

3.8.26 – Watch Your Life and Doctrine Closely

Opening Prayer: Begin with a brief prayer thanking the Lord for bringing you together and asking him to open your eyes to his Word and help you listen well to his Spirit and apply what he shows you. — “Open my eyes so that I may contemplate wondrous things from your instruction.” (Psalm 119:18, CSB).

INTRO: Most of us have seen situations where someone’s actions did not match what they claimed to believe. Sometimes the consequences are devastating—broken trust, public shame, and harm to others. Paul knew that danger well. That’s why he told Timothy to keep a close watch on both his life and his teaching.

Training in godliness is the ongoing process of bringing our external actions and our internal heart orientation into alignment with the truth of the gospel. Our lives will not match our convictions perfectly in this life, but they must match substantially.

Paul calls Timothy to lead in a way where his life matches the truth he teaches. What God calls pastors to lead in, he calls his people to follow and grow in.

MAIN POINT: Watch your life and your doctrine closely so your belief and behavior increasingly match the gospel.

SCRIPTURE-DRIVEN DISCUSSION

Read 1 Timothy 4:11–16 aloud together. Before moving into the questions, take a few minutes to share what stood out to you from the passage.

Additional references from the sermon include Matthew 12:34, Luke 6:46, Galatians 5:6, and Romans 10:17.

APPLICATION QUESTIONS

Q1: How does someone earn respect through demonstration instead of demanding it? (1 Timothy 4:11–12)
Reminder: Paul’s instruction was demonstrate and devote — not demand and degrade.

– Paul tells Timothy not to let anyone look down on his youth, but instead to set an example. Why is example more powerful than authority?

– Which of the five areas Paul lists (speech, conduct, love, faith, purity) do you think has the greatest impact on others? Why?

– Where do you most need to grow so your example strengthens others rather than weakens them?

Q2: What do our words and actions reveal about our hearts? (Matthew 12:34; Luke 6:46)
Reminder:
Our words and actions reveal the direction of our hearts.

– Jesus said the mouth speaks from what fills the heart. What does your everyday speech reveal about what fills your heart?

– Jesus also asked, “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” Where do you see tension between belief and behavior in your life?

– What practices help bring your heart, words, and actions into better alignment with the gospel?

Q3: Why is devotion to Scripture central to spiritual growth? (1 Timothy 4:13; Romans 10:17) Reminder: What we allow to shape our minds will ultimately shape our lives.

– Paul tells Timothy to devote himself to the public reading of Scripture, exhortation, and teaching. Why are all three important in the life of the church?

– How does regularly hearing and discussing Scripture shape the way we think and live?

– What role has God’s Word played recently in shaping your decisions or perspective?

Q4: What does it mean to watch your life and doctrine closely? (1 Timothy 4:15–16) Reminder: Growth in godliness should be visible over time.

– Paul tells Timothy to practice these things so that others may see his progress. What does real spiritual progress look like?

– Why is perseverance so important in the Christian life?

– How does staying grounded in truth protect both your life and the people influenced by you?

LET’S REMEMBER: Paul’s concern was not only that Timothy teach the truth, but that his life reflect the truth he taught. Timothy was to gain influence through the demonstration of a gospel life and devotion to God’s Word. His speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity were to reflect the message he proclaimed. The same principle applies to every believer. As we devote ourselves to Scripture and train for godliness in community, our belief and behavior increasingly align with the gospel.

Since what we’ve discussed is true and relevant, where do you most need to watch your life and doctrine more closely right now? Is there an area where your beliefs and actions need better alignment? What specific step could you take this week to train toward that direction?

CLOSING PRAYER

Lord, thank you for giving us your Word to guide our lives and shape our hearts. Help us watch our lives and our doctrine carefully. Teach us to live in a way that reflects the truth of the gospel so that others may see our progress and glorify you. Strengthen us to persevere in faith and obedience. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
