Guarding the Gospel

1 Timothy 1:1–11

INTRO:

As we begin a new year and restart small groups, we’re also beginning a new sermon series through 1 and 2 Timothy—letters written to help the church remain healthy, faithful, and centered on the gospel.

In this opening message, we were reminded that the gospel is precious—and that what we love, we naturally protect. Paul writes urgently to Timothy because the gospel is under threat from within the church, not through open denial, but through teaching that distorts, distracts, or quietly replaces it.

This passage calls us to remember what God has entrusted to us and challenges us to guard the gospel together—not out of fear or pride, but out of love for God, love for the gospel, and love for people.

MAIN POINT:

The church must zealously and lovingly guard the gospel God has entrusted to us.

SCRIPTURE-DRIVEN DISCUSSION

Read 1 Timothy 1:1–11 aloud together.

Encourage the group to listen carefully for repeated themes—especially references to false teaching, faith, love, the law, and the gospel. After reading, take a few minutes for open reflection. What stood out to you? What felt clear, challenging, or weighty after hearing this passage read aloud?

Additional Scripture references from the sermon include Genesis 15:6; Romans 4; Romans 3:24–26; Luke 5:32; 1 Corinthians 6:11; John 3:16; and Exodus 20.

APPLICATION QUESTIONS

Q1: Why is guarding the gospel so urgent—and personal?
Reminder: “You guard what you love. Love for the gospel results in zealously guarding the gospel.”

  • Why do you think Paul writes with such urgency at the very start of this letter?
  • What does it reveal about how valuable the gospel truly is?
  • In what ways can the gospel be subtly lost—not rejected outright, but assumed, overshadowed, or distorted?

Q2: How do truth and love work together when it comes to sound doctrine?
Reminder:
“The goal of our instruction is love that comes from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith.”

  • How can the pursuit of sound doctrine drift into pride or argument-winning?
  • Why does Paul insist that love—not control or superiority—is the goal?
  • Where do you feel tension between wanting to be right and wanting to be loving?

Q3: How does misunderstanding the law distort the gospel?
Reminder:
“God does not accept you on the basis of what you can do for Him, but on the basis of what He has done for you.”

  • According to the passage, what is the proper purpose of God’s law?
  • How can legalism quietly creep into Christian thinking or living?
  • How does justification by faith alone protect the heart of the gospel?

Q4: What does it look like to guard the gospel in everyday church life?
Reminder:
“We guard the gospel by rejecting false teaching and promoting healthy teaching that conforms to the gospel.”

  • What are some practical ways a church—or a small group—can promote healthy teaching?
  • How do humility, repentance, and grace help preserve gospel clarity?
  • Where might God be calling you personally to grow in gospel faithfulness this year?

LET’S REMEMBER: The gospel is not something we improve, update, or outgrow—it is something we receive, treasure, and protect. God has entrusted the good news of salvation by grace through faith to His church. We guard it not with arrogance or fear, but with love—by rejecting what distorts it and promoting teaching that leads people to repentance, faith, and life in Christ.

CLOSING PRAYER:
Lord, thank You for entrusting us with the gospel. Help us guard it with love, humility, and faithfulness. Keep us grounded in grace, clear in truth, and shaped by what You have done for us in Christ.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
