12.7.25 – To Live Is Christ: Finding Purpose in Joy and Sorrow

Key Verse for 2025: “Watch your life and doctrine closely.” — 1 Timothy 4:16

Summary

This sermon contrasted two worldviews: a hopeless, empty universe without God—and the gospel’s picture of a purposeful, sovereign, loving God. Terry began with Bertrand Russell’s bleak philosophy to show what many people quietly believe: that life is random, suffering is meaningless, and hope is an illusion. But Scripture paints another picture entirely: God is sovereign, purposeful, present, and good.

Paul’s life displayed this reality. In prison, facing death, facing hardship caused by others, and surrounded by circumstances he could not control, Paul lived with confidence, joy, and unshakable purpose: “To live is Christ, and to die is gain.” His life was not at the mercy of circumstances, other people, or random chance. He lived in the “right column”—the realm of his choices—and entrusted the “left column”—God’s sovereign purposes—to God alone.

MAIN POINT:

To live is Christ and to die is gain: the gospel gives meaning to every circumstance and hope in every sorrow.

SCRIPTURE-DRIVEN DISCUSSION

Read Aloud: Philippians 1:3–21. After reading, pause and allow group members to share anything that stood out—phrases, emotions, questions, or connections to Sunday’s message.

Note: Additional references from the sermon include Acts 27–28, Philippians 2, Romans 8, 2 Corinthians 4, John 14, and Mark 10:45.

APPLICATION QUESTIONS

Q1 — How does your view of suffering shape your response to hardship?

Reminder: Terry said suffering is not pointless—God intends for it to grow you, advance the gospel, and encourage others. Your response determines how visible that purpose becomes.

Q2 — Where are you tempted to live in the “left column”—trying to control what only God controls?

Reminder: Paul accepted the circumstances he could not choose and focused on faithfulness in the ones he could.

Q3 — Are you living as if the gospel gives you a win/win life?

Reminder: Terry described the gospel life as win/win—but life apart from Christ as lose/lose, with no purpose in life and no hope in death.

Q4 — What is your personal “to live is _____”?

Reminder: Paul’s purpose was personal, portable, and permanent—his life was not defined by circumstance but by Christ.

LET’S REMEMBER:

Life with Christ is never meaningless. God is sovereign over your circumstances, purposeful in your suffering, and faithful in every season. You are not a pawn in a cruel universe—you are a beloved son or daughter. To live is Christ. To die is gain. Live decided, not deciding.

CLOSING PRAYER

Lord, thank You that our lives are held securely in Your hands. Teach us to trust Your purposes, to live faithfully in what You’ve given us to choose, and to rest in what we cannot control. Help us live with the confidence that to live is Christ and to die is gain. Give us courage, hope, and joy in every circumstance. Amen.
