The resources God has given us to live a thriving life are His Word, Spirit, and People.
Read God’s Word:
Proverbs 13-16
Act 2: God’s Covenant People
Scene 5: Kings and Prophets: God shapes a kingdom people
Background Information: Proverbs 13-16
The “heart” in Scripture is called the “source” or “wellspring” of our lives because all that we do externally flows from who we are becoming internally. Shaping the heart is a long-term project. All the choices we make are shaping us into certain kinds of people over time. The age-old question is, “How do people change?” Is it primarily through a focus on heart motives or on external choices? The answer is, of course, both. We have to simultaneously guard our hearts and make good choices habitual. Proverbs strikes a balance between looking at internal heart issues and the external fruit that is evident in the life of the wise or foolish person. As you read Proverbs, watch for this heart/habit balance. As you seek to become a wise person, watch for his balance in your own life. This is not to discount the work of the Holy Spirit, but the Spirit empowers Christlike choices leading to change.
“His divine power has given us everything required for life and godliness through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. By these he has given us very great and precious promises, so that through them you may share in the divine nature, escaping the corruption that is in the world because of evil desire. For this very reason, make every effort…”
2 Peter 1:3-5
