The resources God has given us to live a thriving life are His Word, Spirit, and People.
Read God’s Word:
Song of Solomon 5:2 – 8:14, Psalm 45
Act 2: God’s Covenant People
Scene 5: Kings and Prophets: God shapes a kingdom people
Background Information: Song of Solomon 5:2 – 8:14, Psalm 45
Though Song of Songs isn’t an allegory where symbolic language is used to describe something else altogether, the actual marriage it describes points to the relationship between Christ and his Church (Ephesians 5:22-32). Marriage is one of God’s good gifts, and the picture it paints of salvation points to his greatest gift, salvation through Jesus Christ.
“Every good and perfect gift is from above.”
James 1:17
True love is a priceless gift, and Solomon tells us that money cannot buy it. In fact, to try and buy love would only purchase scorn. He also describes the enduring reality of love. When human love is true, it cannot be destroyed. In fact, trouble only makes it stronger.
“A huge torrent cannot extinguish love; rivers cannot sweep it away. If a man were to give all his wealth for love, it would be utterly scorned.”
Song of Songs 8:7
Since this priceless and enduring quality is true of imperfect human love, consider the perfection of God’s love for us. When we see a young couple delighting in their newfound love, or an old couple continuing after many years and hardships to keep their commitment alive, we should see the goodness of God in it all. Evolution did not create love, and humans did not create marriage. Human love is a part of being made in the image of God, who is love. Marriage is God’s design; he invented it. This beautiful thing that God has designed points to the future wedding where Christ and his Church will be fully and finally one.
“Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come,
and his Bride has made herself ready.”
Revelation 19:7
