Proverbs 1:20-33 Discussion Guide

5.25.25 – Embracing Wisdom’s Call: Living Secure in Christ

INTRO

This week’s sermon from Proverbs 1:20–33 reminded us that wisdom is not tucked away in scholarly towers—it cries out in the everyday bustle of life. Wisdom calls to the simple, urging repentance and offering life. But there is also a warning: those who ignore her voice will face calamity. And finally, there is blessing—those who listen will dwell secure.

We were also reminded of the bigger picture when reading Proverbs. It’s not a book of life hacks, fortune-cookie advice, or guaranteed formulas. It is a call to live in alignment with God’s design. Wisdom is not a principle, it’s a person—Jesus Christ. He is the power and wisdom of God, and to live wisely means being united to Him.

Main Point: Those who embrace God’s wisdom will not face the storm of final judgment but will dwell secure in Christ. True wisdom begins with repentance and is found by responding to Christ, who alone enables us to live securely in God’s ways.

SCRIPTURE-DRIVEN DISCUSSION

Begin by reading Proverbs 1:20-33 aloud as a group.

Encourage your group to take a moment to reflect before jumping into the discussion. Let the weight and beauty of this passage settle. Then, allow 10 minutes or so for group members to share what stood out, challenged, or convicted them about the reading. Encourage honest responses.

Additional Scriptures from the sermon include 1 Corinthians 1:18 and 24, Colossians 2:3, Matthew 4:17, 7:24–27, and 12:42, John 3:3, 3:19, 5:29, and 14:6, Acts 4:13, Romans 6:5, Jeremiah 31:33–35, Joel 2:28, Psalm 2:4, 37:13, 46:1–2, and 59:8, Isaiah 11:5, and Luke 2:52 and 4:18.

APPLICATION QUESTIONS

Use the categories from the sermon to guide your conversation.

Q1: Wisdom’s Call (vv. 20–23)

Reminder: Wisdom meets us in the marketplace of life—it’s public, available, and always pointing us to

repentance and faith

– What does it look like to hear Wisdom’s voice in your daily life?

– Are there any areas of your life where you’re resisting God’s wisdom, clinging instead to your own way of thinking or living?

Q2: Wisdom’s Warning (vv. 24–32)
Reminder: The day of calamity reveals what your life is built on—will it stand or fall?

– How do these verses challenge our assumptions about God’s patience and judgment?

– What happens when we ignore God’s wisdom for too long?

Q3: Wisdom’s Blessing (v. 33)
Reminder: The wise are not those with perfect lives but those anchored in Christ, the Rock who bore judgment for us.

– What does it mean to “dwell secure” and live “without dread of disaster”?

– How does resting in Christ bring peace in a chaotic world?

Closing Thought—let’s remember: wisdom is not about being smart or having all the answers—it’s about responding to Christ, turning from our own way, and trusting Him to lead us in the way that leads to life.

CLOSING PRAYER

Lord, thank you for the wisdom of Christ revealed in your Word. Jesus, we know you are the way, the truth, and the life. Please help us turn from foolishness and walk in your ways. Thank you that we are secure in Christ, not because of anything we have done, but only by your grace. Give us new hearts—hearts that are grounded in you. Shape us into the people you’ve called us to be as we live for your glory and praise. We pray all this and more in Jesus’ name. Amen.
