Week 21: Day 3: Psalm 119: 1-88

By May 21, 2025Daily Devotional

The resources God has given us to live a thriving life are His Word, Spirit, and People.

Read God’s Word:

Psalm 119: 1-88
Act 2: God’s Covenant People
Scene 5: Kings and Prophets: God shapes a kingdom people

Background Information: Psalm 119: 1-88

Psalm 119 has twenty-two stanzas, arranged according to the twenty-two letters of the Hebrew alphabet. Each stanza has eight verses beginning with that same letter. Using the Hebrew alphabet to shape this Psalm is appropriate since its subject is the word of God. The author refers to God’s law using eight different Hebrew words: law, statute, precept, decree, command, judgment, word, and promise. Each stanza uses at least six of these words. The word of God is such an amazing gift to us. What if we were stuck on this small blue planet spinning its way through space with no way of knowing who we are and why we are here? Many believe this is the case, and so they invent meaning. Invented meaning will, in the end, prove to be meaningless. We cannot be our own life’s foundation. We must have a solid foundation to build our lives on. God has given us his word, revealing who he is, who we are, and how we can live lives restored to him. God’s word is the foundation for our lives. The Psalmist clearly loves the word of God because he loves the God who has given us his word. God’s word reveals his attributes to us and reveals how we can live our lives in ways that honor and enjoy him. Having God’s word is a gift because keeping it is true happiness. There is no human thriving apart from living in line with the word of God.

“How happy are those whose way is blameless,

who walk according to the Lord’s instruction!

Happy are those who keep his decrees

and seek him with all their heart.”

Psalm 119:1-2

“How can a young man keep his way pure?

By keeping your word.

I have sought you with all my heart;

don’t let me wander from your commands.

I have treasured your word in my heart

so that I may not sin against you.”

Psalm 119:9-11
