Psalm 119 Discussion Guide

5.25.25 – Holding On to the Word: Living Under the Authority of Scripture

INTRO

In a world full of competing voices, Psalm 119 calls us to build our lives on something solid—the Word of God. The sermon reminded us that ideas have power, and the ones we trust shape who we become. We were challenged to examine whose voice has “command authority” in our lives.

Main Point: To live a blessed and meaningful life, we must choose to live under the authority of God’s Word.

SCRIPTURE-DRIVEN DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Begin by reading Psalm 119:1–16 aloud.
Encourage your group to let the words sink in before responding. Don’t rush this part—slow reflection leads to honest conversation.

Note: Additional Scripture references from the sermon:
Matthew 8:5–9; 2 Timothy 3:16–17; Romans 6:16–18; John 8:33–36; 1 Peter 4:11;
2 Corinthians 10:5; 1 John 1:7

After Reading:
Take 5 to 10 minutes for open reflection. Let group members share what stood out to them from the reading. Encourage honest thoughts—whether it was something that encouraged them, convicted them, challenged their thinking, or simply caught their attention. This is a good time to pause and listen well before moving into the application questions.

APPLICATION QUESTIONS

These questions are based on the four key principles from the sermon. Each principle includes a reminder from the message. Encourage honest reflection and remember: Jesus is the key to living this out.

Q1: Principle 1: We must balance grace and grit.
Psalm 119:10
– “I have sought you with all my heart; don’t let me wander from your commands.”
– What does it look like to balance grace and grit?
– Where in your life are you leaning too heavily on effort, or too passively waiting on grace?
– How do you stay engaged with God’s Word when motivation runs low?
Reminder: Grit is your effort. Grace is your power source. You need both.

Q2: Principle 2: Direct your emotions towards His Word
Psalm 119:11, 14, 16
– “I have treasured… I rejoice… I delight…”

– How can we direct our emotions toward God’s Word?
-What captures your emotions and affections right now?
-How might investing more time in Scripture reshape your heart over time?
Reminder: You can’t always control your emotions in the moment, but you can train your heart over time to treasure what’s true.

Q3: Principle 3: Talk to yourself and others about the authority of God’s Word

Psalm 119:13 – “With my lips I proclaim all the judgments from your mouth.”

– Why does it matter to speak God’s truth to yourself and others?

-When was the last time you spoke God’s Word to someone—or to yourself?
– What would change in your relationships if you talked more about what God says?
Reminder: Your words can shape your own heart and point others toward truth. Let Scripture be part of everyday conversations.

Q4: Principle 4: Choose your thoughts carefully and intentionally

Psalm 119:15 – “I will meditate on your precepts and think about your ways.”

– What does it mean to choose your thoughts carefully and intentionally?
-What kinds of thoughts are currently shaping your mindset?
-How can you practice taking every thought captive to Christ this week?
Reminder: Your mind is a battlefield. Don’t surrender your thoughts—train them through truth.

CLOSING PRAYER

Lord, thank you for giving us your Word—it is true, trustworthy, and full of life. Please, help us to seek you with all our hearts, treasure your commands, and walk in your ways. Strengthen us by your grace and guide our thoughts, words, and emotions to reflect your truth. We want to live lives that please you and bring you glory.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
