“Just as each one has received a gift, use it to serve others, as good stewards of the varied grace of God.” 1 Peter 4:10
We have read of how God called a group of Israelites to serve the nation in caring for the temple. Now we see that God has called others to serve as soldiers, commanders, logistics experts, farmers, shepherds, ranchers, and government officials. Which role was more important for the nation? Which job or calling was more “spiritual” or special? These questions are silly because the answer is obvious. Whatever God has called a person to is the most important thing for that person to do. We tend to divide roles and responsibilities into categories of relative importance. We even use terms like “important,” or “distinguished,” or “high ranking.” God doesn’t see things that way. We should respect people who have been called to positions of leadership, but we should not see them as anything other than servants. We are to use the gifts that God has given us to serve God and others, not self. In the end there will be no “high ranking” and “low ranking” people bowing before the throne of God. There will be two categories of persons: God and those who worship God. We see that the mighty warrior, King David, is now old and feeble and will soon die (1 Kings 1). All people of all ranks die. We must learn to see people from a proper perspective, for our good and theirs. All people are either in Christ or they are not. We are not to be impressed by people, we are to only be impressed with God. We are to love people, and that love will include making Christ known to them if they have not yet believed the gospel.
“From now on, then, we do not know anyone from a worldly perspective. Even if we have known Christ from a worldly perspective, yet now we no longer know him in this way. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and see, the new has come.” 1 Corinthians 5:16,17
