Act 2: God’s Covenant People
Scene 5: Kings and Prophets: God shapes a kingdom people

Background Information: Psalms 89, 96, 100, 101, 107

In Psalm 89 we have the privilege of listening in on the internal struggle of a man pondering God’s covenant promise to David with the current situation in Israel. God can do anything, but yet all around him their enemies are rejoicing, and the fulfillment of the promise is nowhere in sight. He ends, as all our prayers should, “Blessed be the Lord forever, amen and amen!” Amen means, “truly” or “so be it.” Psalm 96 harkens back to the day when the Ark was brought into Jerusalem, the former headquarters of Israel’s enemy. The throne of God and the throne of David were firmly established in that place. But as we know, the throne of David would be displaced by human sin. It is good to remember what God has done as we wait for what he will yet do. Part of this active remembering is choosing to praise him in worship. We must “shout for joy to the Lord,” regardless of whether we feel joyful or hopeful. Worship is not primarily about how we feel; it is about telling ourselves and each other the truth about what is real. Psalm 107 gives four mini stories of human predicaments and God’s divine rescue. These are representative of all the various troubles humans might find themselves in and the hopeful looking to God in times of trouble that mark his faithful people. God is able to come to your rescue. In fact, if you put your faith in him, you can be assured that he will do so, either in this life or the next. As for our part, we are to say with Paul, “Whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s.”(Romans 14:8).
