David the King has been anointed to shepherd the people. Anointing was a symbolic act that would include the placement of oil to set someone apart for a purpose. The symbolic act represented a spiritual fact. The fact was that God had set David apart. Jesus is called the “Messiah,” which means literally “Anointed one.” Notice that David was the same age as King Jesus when he began his public ministry. David masterminded the taking of Jerusalem, and it became known as the City of David. David achieved his success because the Lord God of armies (hosts) was with him. God commands the heavenly armies, and one day the Lord Jesus will lead those armies in total and final victory (Revelation 19:11-16). David’s leadership inspired acts of courage and loyalty; his pouring out the water was not a foolish waste, but an act of worship. He was truly a great leader, at least at this point in his life. What follows is a list of the sheer number of soldiers who came to follow David because the Lord set David apart and because David was in fact a great king. We must remember that it was both the Lord’s choice and David’s choices that made David a great king. If we fail to keep both sides of that tension in place, we might lose balance in our own lives. This great warrior King was a man after God’s own heart. Consider that when he finally consolidates all of Israel under his command, he marks that event by writing Psalm 133, and he credits God alone with the blessing. David took responsibility for own his own choices, but he gave God the glory for the outcomes. This is the right way for us to think and live.
