The resources God has given us to live a thriving life are His Word, Spirit, and People.

Read God’s Word:

1 Chronicles 6, Psalms 36, 39, 77-78
Act 2: God’s Covenant People
Scene 5: Kings and Prophets: God shapes a kingdom people

Background Information: 1 Chronicles 6, Psalms 36, 39, 77-78

After the exile, Israel returned to the land and to a diminished but restored Temple system.   In order to remember and understand God’s plan for the temple, Ezra laid out the Levitical genealogy. This is important because all the priests came from the Tribe of Levi, however, not all Levites were priests. In order to be a priest, you had to be from the Levite tribe and from the family line of Aaron. The Tribe of Levites served in and around the Tabernacle and then later, the Temple, but only Levites who were descendants of Aaron served as high priests. There was a lot of support work required in the temple, and the Levites did the work of cleaning, security, dealing with the livestock used in the sacrifices, record keeping, and some were even professional musicians (worship leaders). The priests descended from Aaron had the very great honor of offering sacrifices on behalf of the people.  Since the Levites had a special role in Israel, they were the only tribe not given a physical land allotment. Instead, they were to live scattered among all the tribes. They lived in specified cities among the other tribes and would rotate to Jerusalem to perform temple duties when required. If you are tempted to feel sorry for the Levites, don’t. They received much more than the land; God himself was their inheritance. “Although Levi has no inheritance among his brothers, the Lord is his inheritance, as he promised him.” (Deut. 18:2). You may own a home and have a lot of “stuff,” or you may have very little in terms of material wealth. Either way, as the saying goes, “you can’t take it with you.” This fact should not trouble us because we are like the Levites; our true inheritance is Christ. (Ephesians 1:11)
