Background Information: 1 Chronicles 3-5
Ezra is writing to a people returned from exile, when all the former glory of the Davidic Kingdom was long gone. He is using genealogical history to remind the people that the covenant God made with David of a lasting kingdom is not lost. He fixes their place in time starting with the very beginning of human history. From Adam to the tribe of Judah and the line of David, human history marches not to its own beat or to the beat of blind circumstance, but to the tune of God’s sovereignty. Don’t try to “get something out” of these lists of names, just recognize that, to the original readers, it would speak of a future return of the promised King and his eternal Kingdom. They were not at the whims of pagan kings or random historical events. God has promised this, and he will keep his promise. As you read these lists, know that you are included in the long line. Jesus, the Lion of the Tribe of David, has grafted you into his family line. You are not going to be only one more forgotten name in a meaningless list of long dead ancestors. You will see the return of the King. If you have trusted Christ, you will live in his eternal Kingdom.
