Week 14: Day 3: 1 Samuel 9-12

By April 2, 2025Daily Devotional

The resources God has given us to live a thriving life are His Word, Spirit, and People.

Read God’s Word:

1 Samuel 9-12
Act 2: God’s Covenant People
Scene 5: Kings and Prophets: God shapes a kingdom people

Background Information: 1 Samuel 9-12

Israel wanted a king like the other nations had, and this was exactly what they got. Saul was from an impressive family, and he was physically impressive. He possessed all the markings of a great leader. Of course, I am being sarcastic. As you read the story of his beginnings, he shows evidence of many leadership flaws. His servant has to help him make simple decisions. He is standing in front of the well-known Samuel and doesn’t recognize him. When he is selected as king he is nowhere to be found; they have to inquire of the Lord as to his whereabouts. The new king of Israel is found hiding among the supplies. Thus begins the time of the Kings in Israel’s history. Saul will be used by God to bring some impressive victories to Israel, but he will fall in terrible fashion. All of Israel’s kings will fail, and God will raise up prophets who speak of a future divine-human king who will establish peace and justice. The New Testament reveals this King to be Jesus, the Word become flesh. God’s unfolding of his plan for salvation is amazing to behold. You sit at your place in human history and look back on what God has done. You must remember, even though Scripture is complete, that God’s plan is not. God is at work still, and his plan continues to unfold. The King will yet return to usher in the time of lasting peace and justice.
