The resources God has given us to live a thriving life are His Word, Spirit, and People.
Read God’s Word:
Deuteronomy 12-15
Act 2: God’s Covenant People
Scene 3: The Sinai Covenant and law: God embraces and instructs his people
Background Information: Deuteronomy 12-15
Moses regulates the killing of animals for food; the blood must be poured out and not consumed. The symbolism is that God is the master of life, and it is to be given back to him. Life is a precious thing. It is not wrong to take an animal’s life, but it is wrong to fail to consider that God is the giver and sustainer of all life. If it seems harsh to kill those who would lead Israel into idolatry, consider what the cost in human life will be when Israel falls into idolatry. We must be ruthless with the idols of sex, money, pleasure, work, stuff, etc., in our own lives. We must go to war against those things that make war on our own souls. Israel was not to participate in any practice of the pagan nations around them. This included cutting their bodies in mourning or eating certain kinds of foods. Isreal was to be a thermostat, setting the spiritual temperature in the land. Instead, they were too often a thermometer, merely reflecting the spiritual temperature in the land. Which are you, thermostat or thermometer? What will you be today in your home and place of work?
