Background Information: Deuteronomy 8-11
God knew their hearts; they needed to know them as well. So, they were tested in the wilderness. What did they find? The testing revealed that they did not really trust God, they only blamed him and his spokesman, Moses. Trouble reveals what is in us, but so does prosperity. Moses warns the people that as they prosper in the land, they will be prone to forget that it is the Lord who provides. We tend to blame God in trouble and forget him in prosperity. This is a terrible combination. Instead, we must trust him in trouble and thank him in prosperity. Some say that God can’t have it both ways. He can’t take credit for good times and refuse to take blame for the bad. Yes, he absolutely can. Moses will remind them that the heavens and the earth and all that are in them belong to God. Israel must understand this so they don’t become confused over what is about to happen. They would have victory over stronger armies, not because they are so good, but because God is. The people that lived in the land would be punished by God because of their own wickedness. God had given them hundreds of years to change, but their evil had only increased over time. Moses gives this next generation a historical review of their parents’ rebellion during the exodus. They would be foolish to believe they are better than “that” generation. Each generation tends to judge those before them for their sins and then become just like them. Only the gospel has the power to break this generational curse.

Pray for U.S. military members who are deployed around the world. Pray for Wes Lewis as he serves in his deployment. Ask God for safety for him. Pray that he would be a gospel presence to those he serves with. Pray for his family as he is gone.
