The resources God has given us to live a thriving life are His Word, Spirit, and People.
Read God’s Word:
Leviticus 19-22
Act 2: God’s Covenant People
Scene 3: The Sinai Covenant and law: God embraces and instructs his people
Background Information: Leviticus 19-22
What does it mean that God is holy? The holiness of God refers to the unparalleled moral nature of God. All that is good comes from God. God does not merely possess these qualities like a human might, but he is the source of them. He is therefore utterly separated from sin and sin cannot be in his presence, just as dark cannot be in the presence of light. Dark is the absence of light, just as sin is the absence of holiness (goodness). God gave his people laws, the imposition of holiness from the outside in. Do this or else! Do this and be blessed! Many of the prohibitions had to do with not being like the terrible pagan religions that existed at the time. Some were civil laws since they were a nation, and nations exist through laws. Some were ceremonial laws reminding them of who God is and who they are. Their lives were dirt and flesh and animal food and feces. Their lives were body and blood and work and sweat. How do you maintain the truth of the eternal God in your heart and mind in the midst of the daily toil and normal human functions? God used all these laws to train his people, but it didn’t work. The day was coming, and has in fact come, when these laws would be written on our hearts. Holiness would be possible inside out!
“You show that you are Christ’s letter, delivered by us, not written with ink but with the Spirit of the living God—not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.”
2 Corinthians 3:3
