The resources God has given us to live a thriving life are His Word, Spirit, and People.
Read God’s Word:
Leviticus 11-14
Act 2: God’s Covenant People
Scene 3: The Sinai Covenant and law: God embraces and instructs his people
Background Information: Leviticus 11-14
Priests have been selected, and now the ministry of the priests is described. They serve as mediators of the ritual and moral purity laws of the nation. Their duties include functions of spiritual health and public health. A person’s whole life was tied together in a “single story.” There was no downstairs “physical world” and then an upstairs “spiritual world.” There was a single world where God ruled and set before the people the path of thriving in relationship with him. Certain animals were impure and forbidden to eat. Perhaps this had to do with the fact that some animals were more prone to make humans sick if not properly cooked, like pigs. At any rate the basic idea is that everything, including eating, was to point Israel back to the holiness of God. The priests were to protect community physical health by diagnosing potentially contagious skin diseases. They were to protect community spiritual health by making sure someone in an “impure” state would not attempt to enter God’s presence. It didn’t matter if their condition was “not their fault,” impure is impure and God is holy. We are no longer under these complex laws, but we must remember what they represented: God is holy, and he is worthy of our full life devotion. “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31
