Week 6: Day 2: Exodus 10-13

By February 4, 2025Daily Devotional

The resources God has given us to live a thriving life are His Word, Spirit, and People.

Read God’s Word:

Exodus 10-13
Act 2: God’s Covenant People
Scene 2: Deliverance: God rescues his people.

Background Information: Exodus 10-13

They have come to be known as the “ten plagues,” but the word means “blow, or strike.” A better translation would be “sign,” much like the signs of Jesus pointing to his claims to be the Messiah. God was not simply hammering Egypt with plagues; he was revealing himself through the signs.  Some believe that each plague/blow was tied to a distinct Egyptian god. Each blow was designed to signify that Israel’s God is the one true God. Notice that sometimes it is said that Pharaoh hardened his heart and other times that God hardened his heart. Which it is?  Both. Pharaoh could have turned if he had so chosen, but there is a point of no return for the human heart (see Hebrews 6:4-6). The details that God gives for the Passover may seem petty, but they are specific. What would be the other option for God giving these details?  “You guys do something and I will see if I approve.” No, God doesn’t make us guess as to what he wants from us, he has given us all that we need in his word in order for us to know how to live a life pleasing to him. Notice that the promise of God is fulfilled in Joseph’s life as his remains are taken out of Egypt.
