Background Information: Exodus 5-9
Moses, the reluctant leader, goes to Pharoah and things become much worse for the people. His leadership is immediately questioned, and his insecurity grows. This is not a great beginning for a guy who didn’t want the job in the first place. God renews his promise to Moses, and then we have what seems to be strangely placed genealogy. The genealogy focuses on the fact that Moses and Aaron were Levites. They will have a special role in Israel as the family of priests serving as intermediaries between the people and God. Things may look bad for Moses and the people at this stage, but God has set apart a people for himself, and he has set Moses and Aaron apart to lead this people. Meanwhile Moses continues to doubt himself as he focuses on himself. He is more tuned in to his own lack of speaking ability than he is to God’s power. Moses is the reluctant and insecure “savior” of God’s people. He will grow in his faith in God and in his own ability to lead, but he will ultimately disqualify himself from leading the people into the land of promise. Moses points forward to the true Savior, who will end the Levitical priesthood. Jesus will serve as the final high priest, and he will not sin or fail. He is the faithful high priest and the true Savior of the world.
