Week 5: Day 2: Job 29-32

By January 28, 2025Daily Devotional

The resources God has given us to live a thriving life are His Word, Spirit, and People.

Read God’s Word:

Job 29-32
Act 2: God’s Covenant People
Scene 1: The People: God calls a covenant people

Background Information: Job 29-32

Job describes in detail how good his former life was.  Then he describes the horrors of his life at present.  Finally, in chapter 31, he describes his own innocence of sins.  He is building, he thinks, his case against God.  When Job is describing his former life, we have to see it through his context.  He is not bragging; he is describing the blessed life.  God had given him all of that.  Then God had taken it away. Remember, in Job’s worldview, God blesses those who obey him and curses those who don’t—it’s just that simple.  When Job goes through the list of possible sins and denies involvement in any of it, it becomes clear that God, not Job, has broken faith with his bargain.  But where did they ever find this bargain? God had not promised it to them.  It was merely a human invention.  Job’s elder friends had gone silent, and now a young man steps up. He insists that he just cannot possibly keep quiet, that he is bursting with words.  The fact that he thinks he is just bursting with words is a good indication that he should have remained silent.  The old guys lost the case, now it is time for the young guy to set everyone straight.  His arrogance is evident in his self-introduction. Whenever we speak, we must seek to bless, not to impress. Elihu would have probably agreed with that statement, and yet his words indicated otherwise.

Confess your sins to God
Pray for FCA. Ask God to use Keith Townsend to make the truth of the gospel known to athletes and coaches at Friends and WSU. Pray that God would use FCA to encourage believing athletes and coaches to share the good news with others.
Ask God for… (what else concerns you?)
