The resources God has given us to live a thriving life are His Word, Spirit, and People.
Read God’s Word:
Job 25-28
Act 2: God’s Covenant People
Scene 1: The People: God calls a covenant people
Background Information: Job 25-28
Bildad’s third speech is short, and Zophar issues no more speeches; mercifully, his friends are running out of things to say. Bildad’s short speech reveals nothing new regarding the greatness of God as opposed to man’s humble status. Job responds sarcastically to Zophar’s repetition of the obvious; his friends are saying nothing he doesn’t already know about God. Job then gives his own cosmology: a summary of the universe that includes the place of punishment after death, Sheol and Abaddon. He understands that since even the cosmos in its vastness is nothing compared to God, obviously man does not compare to God. However, Job does not waiver in his belief that God has deprived him of justice. The book of Job is told as a story with a narrator in the background. Job is a part of what is called “Wisdom literature,” along with Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. Chapter 28 is likely an interlude by this narrator giving us a sort of summary of what has happened thus far. It tells us that wisdom cannot be discovered by human effort or purchased through human wealth. God alone gives wisdom. The last verse in the chapter gives the classic definition of true wisdom. “The fear of the Lord is wisdom.” To fear the Lord is to obey him. To obey him is to love him.
