Week 2: Day 1: Genesis 12-13

By January 6, 2025Daily Devotional

The resources God has given us to live a thriving life are His Word, Spirit, and People.

Read God’s Word:

Genesis 12-13
Act 2: God’s Covenant People
Scene 1: The People: God calls a Covenant People

Background Information: Genesis 12-13

God’s work in salvation history begins just as the creation of the world began, with God speaking.  Here God speaks to Abram and tells him simply to go to the land he will show him.  This is more of a challenge than we can imagine.  He is to leave all that he knows and follow God into what is, for him, an unknown future.  This closely resembles the call of the Lord Jesus to his disciples when he tells them to leave all that they know behind and follow him.  What did God promise Abram if he obeyed? That he would become the father of a great nation, and all the nations would be blessed through him.  The disciples of the Lord Jesus were also made into a holy (set apart) nation, and through them the world was blessed as they took the gospel to the ends of the earth.  “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his possession, so that you may proclaim the praises of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” (1 Peter 2:9) God has called us to follow him into what is, for us, an unknown future.  We do not follow blindly; we follow with the sight of faith.  We see clearly–not what the future holds, but rather the one who holds the future. This same God, the Father of Abraham, is the promise keeper, the cosmos creator, and the one who has called us out of darkness into his wonderful light. This same God is Father, Son, and Spirit.  There is no one like him. How can we not declare his praises?
