John 15:18-25 Discussion Guide

READ John 15:18-27 aloud in the group. Remind your members of how the passage connects with verses 1-17.

15-18 In a Nutshell: The world hates Christians because of our link with Jesus. We are not a part of the world; we belong to Jesus, so we’re not to be surprised when troubles come our way. In fact, we expect them to come our way, and by the power of the Holy Spirit, we continue to abide in Jesus and proclaim the gospel as we bear witness to Jesus and build our lives on Christ’s foundation.

SHARE: Give the group a few minutes to share anything that stands out to them from the passage.

DISCUSS: OpenDoors annual report stated that Christian persecution across the world is on the rise. Here are some stats: 5,000 Christians were killed for their faith, 280 were forced from their homes, 15,000 churches or public Christian properties were attacked or closed, and over 3,000 Christians worldwide were detained without trial for their faith.

Question: Were you aware of this persecution? What do you think about it? Do you feel disconnected from it? Why?

Question: Christians in the U.S. aren’t facing persecution like other parts of the world do; however, we do face it.

  • What are some ways you’ve either seen or even experienced hatred towards Christians? What is the main reason for this hatred?
  • How are Christians supposed to respond to hatred?
  • What is the greatest danger we face in persecution? How can we fight this danger?
  • What can you do to remain in Christ and be fruitful? Jim listed three things. Are there other things you can do? Share your thoughts and explain why you think it would be helpful to the group.
  • What are some specific things you need to do to abide in Christ? Be honest with the group. As you discuss the reasons, remember that you have the agency. How can you take action today?
