Hearing God’s Voice from His Word
James 4:8 says, “Come near to God and he will come near to you.”
Take a moment and turn your attention to God. Tell God that you desire to trust and obey Him. Ask God to speak to you from His word.

Psalm 73:21-28
21 When I became embittered
and my innermost being was wounded,
22 I was stupid and didn’t understand;
I was an unthinking animal toward you.
23 Yet I am always with you;
you hold my right hand.
24 You guide me with your counsel,
and afterward you will take me up in glory.
25 Who do I have in heaven but you?

Meditate on Verse 25 “Who do I have in heaven but you?And I desire nothing on earth but you.” If you were in heaven, is there anyone you would be more enamored with than the holy God. If you knew every influencer, every political leader, and could text any celebrity you wanted but didn’t know God would your connection with the important people be enough. He is our longing. Praise God that he has made himself known to us.

The Truth Will Set You Free
31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” 33 They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?”
34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. 38 I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.”
You Are of Your Father the Devil
39 They answered him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works Abraham did, 40 but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. 41 You are doing the works your father did.” They said to him, “We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father—even God.” 42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but he sent me. 43 Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word. 44 You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. Before Abraham Was, I Am
48 The Jews answered him, “Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?” 49 Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. 50 Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.” 52 The Jews said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon! Having God’s Ear through Prayer
- Give thanks to God for His gifts and His goodness.
- Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal sin to you.
- Confess your sin to Him and receive forgiveness.
(1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sin He is faithful and just and will forgive our sins.”) - Bring your personal requests to God.
(Psalm 62:8 “Pour out your heart before God”) - Pray for someone in your small group.

Scripture Reflection from the Sermon
One of the most quoted (misquoted) verses in the Bible is “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” First, what is often meant by that quote? Usually “truth” is equated with knowledge or education. But does knowledge set you free? Ask Adam and Eve. They gained knowledge when they ate the forbidden fruit, but in the process they lost freedom. Of course, education that aligns with the reality of God is good. This includes science as the study of the created cosmos. However, experiential knowledge of evil puts us in chains, and knowledge that is untrue makes us foolish. So, what did Jesus mean by the quote? It’s important to know, after all, it is his quote. The key to understanding is in using the entire quote, not just a part of it. He said, “If you continue in my word, you really are my disciples. You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” What Jesus meant is that as we put our faith in him, as revealed by obedience to him, then we will live in his truth. The truth is the gospel, the good news of Jesus. The freedom is from sin, death, and separation from God.
