Hearing God’s Voice from His Word
James 4:8 says, “Come near to God and he will come near to you.”
Take a moment and turn your attention to God. Tell God that you desire to trust and obey Him. Ask God to speak to you from His word.

Psalm 7:10-13 My shield is God Most High, who saves the upright in heart.
11 God is a righteous judge, a God who displays his wrath every day.
12 If he does not relent, he will sharpen his sword; he will bend and string his bow.
13 He has prepared his deadly weapons; he makes ready his flaming arrows.

Praise God that he is a righteous judge. Praise God that he can relent and show mercy.
Praise God because he saves. Praise God because he can protect.

Jesus, the Light of the World
12 Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”
13 The Pharisees replied, “You are making those claims about yourself! Such testimony is not valid.”
14 Jesus told them, “These claims are valid even though I make them about myself. For I know where I came from and where I am going, but you don’t know this about me. 15 You judge me by human standards, but I do not judge anyone. 16 And if I did, my judgment would be correct in every respect because I am not alone. The Father who sent me is with me. 17 Your own law says that if two people agree about something, their witness is accepted as fact. 18 I am one witness, and my Father who sent me is the other.”
19 “Where is your father?” they asked.
Jesus answered, “Since you don’t know who I am, you don’t know who my Father is. If you knew me, you would also know my Father.” 20 Jesus made these statements while he was teaching in the section of the Temple known as the Treasury. But he was not arrested, because his time had not yet come.
The Unbelieving People Warned
21 Later Jesus said to them again, “I am going away. You will search for me but will die in your sin. You cannot come where I am going.”
22 The people asked, “Is he planning to commit suicide? What does he mean, ‘You cannot come where I am going’?”
23 Jesus continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You belong to this world; I do not. 24 That is why I said that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am who I claim to be, you will die in your sins.”
25 “Who are you?” they demanded.
Jesus replied, “The one I have always claimed to be. 26 I have much to say about you and much to condemn, but I won’t. For I say only what I have heard from the one who sent me, and he is completely truthful.” 27 But they still didn’t understand that he was talking about his Father.
28 So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man on the cross, then you will understand that I am he. I do nothing on my own but say only what the Father taught me. 29 And the one who sent me is with me—he has not deserted me. For I always do what pleases him.” 30 Then many who heard him say these things believed in him.
Having God’s Ear through Prayer
- Express thanksgiving to God.
- Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal sin to you.
- Confess your sin to Him and receive forgiveness.
(1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sin He is faithful and just and will forgive our sins.”) - Bring your personal requests to God.
(Psalm 62:8 “Pour out your heart before God”) - Pray for someone in your small group.
- Join with others from River and pray for those who do not know God. Ask God to help you see the lost people around you and have compassion for them. Ask God for opportunities to build trust. Ask God to give you opportunities to have gospel conversations.

Scripture Reflection from the Sermon
The root sin in our lives is unbelief. We do not “believe” in God when we do not fully follow and obey him. This root of sin(singular) grows into the fruit of sins(plural). Every destructive part of our lives, every bitter fruit we choke down is grown from the root of our refusal to truly see God as King of our lives. We think we know better, but we don’t. We think we can do better, but we can’t. We think our way will be good, but it is not. Why do we not fully and finally just crown him Lord and say “yes, Lord!”…it is because we are sinful, weak, and foolish. We continue to refuse to bow the knee to Him but he continues to love and pursue us. Sin is just so stupid. How I wish we could get this into our minds in a way that would shape our lives in a lasting way. Stupid is stupid. God is King. Let us leave the stupidity of sin behind and follow our King. Sin is no equal trade for obedience. It is a thousand fold loss, an infinite loss to eternal gain. Sin is no small thing that is easily dealt with. It took the blood of our Savior to deal with it. We must not now see it as some trifling thing that can be played with as we choose. We must see it as an enemy to all that is good and eternal and noble. Jesus spilled his blood for our sin, how can we not give full energy and effort to no longer live in our sin?
