2 Timothy 3:16-17 Devotional – Day 1

Hearing God’s Voice from His Word

James 4:8 says, “Come near to God and he will come near to you.”
Take a moment and turn your attention to God. Tell God that you desire to trust and obey Him. Ask God to speak to you from His word.

Psalm of the Day

Psalm 27:1-4 The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?
When the wicked advance against me to devour me, it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall. Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then I will be confident.

Light, Salvation, and Stronghold: The writer of this Psalm says that the Lord is all of those things. Light – showing the way, revealing the truth. Salvation – He has saved us. He is the only one who can save completely. He is a stronghold. He keeps us safe. Praise God for being all light, salvation, and stronghold in your life.

Scripture Reading

2 Timothy 3:1-6, 10-17
New International Version

3 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.

6 They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires,

A Final Charge to Timothy
10 You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, 11 persecutions, sufferings—what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. 12 In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13 while evildoers and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15 and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Living as God’s People by applying the Bible

Scripture Reflection from the Sermon

This week, we’re going to reflect on the profound impact of the Holy Scriptures. Paul’s teachings to Timothy underscore the Scriptures’ unique ability to provide us with wisdom and guidance, offering a reassuring beacon of hope in our journey of faith. When you read the opening verses of chapter 3, even though they were written 2000 years ago, you’d think Paul was writing about our world today! I think this in itself is a testimony to the power and validity of God’s word. Today, many think of the Bible as some relic from the past that has nothing to say about living in the 21st century. It’s what C.S. Lewis calls chronological snobbery. Don’t buy into the current thoughts of the culture. Be determined to stand on the truth of God. And know that God’s truth is always going to be opposed. God has given us all we need to know in his word. Trust him to lead and speak to you. Know that his word is fully sufficient for everything you face today.
