Hearing God’s Voice from His Word
James 4:8 says, “Come near to God and he will come near to you.”
Take a moment and turn your attention to God. Tell God that you desire to trust and obey Him. Ask God to speak to you from His word.
Psalm of the Day
Psalm 29:3-9 The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord thunders over the mighty waters. The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is majestic. The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon. He makes Lebanon leap like a calf, Sirion like a young wild ox. The voice of the Lord strikes with flashes of lightning. The voice of the Lord shakes the desert; the Lord shakes the Desert of Kadesh. The voice of the Lord twists the oaks and strips the forests bare. And in his temple all cry, “Glory!”

The Voice of the Lord. God speaks and His words have impact. You may not hear an audible voice but He does speak. Ask Him to help you listen. Ask Him to speak to those around you. Praise Him that He is a God who speaks.

2 My little children, I am writing you these things so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ the righteous one. 2 He himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours, but also for those of the whole world.
3 This is how we know that we know him: if we keep his commands. 4 The one who says, “I have come to know him,” and yet doesn’t keep his commands, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps his word, truly in him the love of God is made complete. This is how we know we are in him: 6 The one who says he remains in him should walk just as he walked.

This one is the antichrist: the one who denies the Father and the Son. 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father; he who confesses the Son has the Father as well.
24 What you have heard from the beginning is to remain in you. If what you have heard from the beginning remains in you, then you will remain in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is the promise that he himself made to us: eternal life.
26 I have written these things to you concerning those who are trying to deceive you. 27 As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you don’t need anyone to teach you. Instead, his anointing teaches you about all things and is true and is not a lie; just as it has taught you, remain in him.
28 So now, little children, remain in him so that when he appears we may have confidence and not be ashamed before him at his coming. 29 If you know that he is righteous, you know this as well: Everyone who does what is right has been born of him.at zeal, what justice! In every way you showed yourselves to be pure in this matter.
Having God’s Ear through Prayer
- Express thanksgiving to God.
- Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal sin to you.
- Confess your sin to Him and receive forgiveness.
(1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sin He is faithful and just and will forgive our sins.”) - Bring your personal requests to God.
(Psalm 62:8 “Pour out your heart before God”) - Pray for someone in your small group.
- Join with others from River and pray for the River Barn dance that is happening tonight. Pray that unchurched friends would come and experience fun Christian gathering that gospel seeds might be planted. And pray that we would just have tons of fun as well!

Scripture Reflection from the Sermon
Today let’s apply the three “tests” to our own lives. Not to see if we “pass,” but to see how they can help us train for godliness. Tests are often used to show us where we are, so we can improve. We usually see them as pass/fail, and that is the end of the story. In the case of these tests, we need to see them as training. How can we become better at living our lives as Christ would? How would Jesus deal with this person, this challenge, this day, if he were living in my exact circumstances? How does Jesus want me to treat this person right here, right now? What does love for them look like? How do I make sure I am following and worshipping Jesus as revealed in Scripture? Have I tried to make him in my image, or am I seeking to be conformed to his? Do I think of him as serving at my pleasure, or me as serving at his? He is the Lord of heaven and earth; do I act towards him in this way? How can you use these three tests to grow your confidence in Christ? How can you be more faithful and attentive in these areas to increase your enjoyment of Christ?
