Next Generation Devo – Day 3

Hearing God’s Voice from His Word

James 4:8 says, “Come near to God and he will come near to you.”
Take a moment and turn your attention to God. Tell God that you desire to trust and obey Him. Ask God to speak to you from His word.

Psalm of the Day

Psalm 70 God, hurry to rescue me. Lord, hurry to help me!
2 Let those who seek to kill me be disgraced and confounded; let those who wish me harm be turned back and humiliated. 3 Let those who say, “Aha, aha!” retreat because of their shame.
4 Let all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; let those who love your salvation continually say, “God is great!” 5 I am oppressed and needy; hurry to me, God. You are my help and my deliverer;
Lord, do not delay.

God is personally aware of you. Your need for help does not go unnoticed. Confess your need for help. Seek His help. Ask Him for help. Yes He knows our needs before we ask, but prayer shapes us as we ask for His help. Rejoice in His salvation and say to Him that He is Great.

SCRIPTURE READING:
Joshua 24:14-18 – New Living Translation
14 “So fear the Lord and serve him wholeheartedly. Put away forever the idols your ancestors worshiped when they lived beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt. Serve the Lord alone. 15 But if you refuse to serve the Lord, then choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live? But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.”

16 The people replied, “We would never abandon the Lord and serve other gods. 17 For the Lord our God is the one who rescued us and our ancestors from slavery in the land of Egypt. He performed mighty miracles before our very eyes. As we traveled through the wilderness among our enemies, he preserved us. 18 It was the Lord who drove out the Amorites and the other nations living here in the land. So we, too, will serve the Lord, for he alone is our God.”

Having God’s Ear through Prayer

  • Express thanksgiving to God.
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal sin to you.
  • Confess your sin to Him and receive forgiveness.
(1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sin He is faithful and just and will forgive our sins.”)
  • Bring your personal requests to God.
(Psalm 62:8 “Pour out your heart before God”)
  • Pray for someone in your small group.
  • Join with others from River and pray for those who do not know God. Ask God to help you see the lost people around you and have compassion for them. Ask God for opportunities to build trust. Ask God to give you opportunity to have gospel conversations.

Living as God’s People by applying the Bible

Scripture Reflection from the Sermon

Do you know the children in our church? Not all of them, but some of them? Do you seek them out? Do you pray for them? Do you volunteer to work with them in nursery, super church, or Next? These are your kids. They are not someone else’s responsibility, they are yours. God has placed you in our church, and so this generation is your privilege and your responsibility. Perhaps you already give time and effort to working with our kids. Then well done! I know it can become tedious, and it can seem like it is bearing no fruit. Be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord. Your labor in the Lord is never in vain. (1 Cor. 15:58) Pray for our children now. Pray for what part you should be playing in their lives.
