Hebrews 2 Devotional – Day 2

ADORATION – Reflect on God’s Greatness

God is a Trinity
God exists as three persons, yet he is one being. Each person of the Trinity—the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—has a separate identity while yet possessing the full nature of God.

Genesis 1:26 Let US make man in OUR own image.
Matthew 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit (In this passage each person of the Trinity is given equal authority. Even though the word trinity is never used in the bible, it is implied here.)

Praise the Triune God
Praise the God who is love. He could not be loving if the trinity were false. Praise the God who is perfect and complete. Praise the God who enjoys endless fellowship. Praise the Son who took on the human flesh to be our substitute on the cross. Praise the Holy Spirit for his work to convict of sin and reveal the truth.

CONFESSION: Confess your sins to God and receive his continued mercy.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9

THANKSGIVING: Giving thanks to God for his specific blessings in our lives.

“Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.” Psalm 100

SUPPLICATION: Bringing our requests to God.

  • Bring your personal prayer requests to God.
  • Pray Isaac and Suzanne Micheals. Ask God to encourage them and guide them as they serve at Black Forest Academy in Germany.

Hebrews 2 – English Standard Version
Warning Against Neglecting Salvation
2 Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. 2 For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, 3 how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, 4 while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.

The Founder of Salvation
5 For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking. 6 It has been testified somewhere,

“What is man, that you are mindful of him,
or the son of man, that you care for him?
7 You made him for a little while lower than the angels;
you have crowned him with glory and honor,
8 putting everything in subjection under his feet.”

Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him. 9 But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

10 For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. 11 For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers, 12 saying,

“I will tell of your name to my brothers;
in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.”

13 And again,
“I will put my trust in him.”
And again,
“Behold, I and the children God has given me.”

14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. 16 For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. 17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

SCRIPTURE REFLECTION:
Old Testament prophets did more “forthtelling” than “foretelling.” They told the truth about what God wanted and what was happening in the lives of the people that was contrary to God’s will. They did predict the future but it was often conditional. The conditions were, “If you keep drifting, you will experience judgment, if you turn and go God’s way you will experience blessing.” It was about dangerous drifting versus the active pursuit of God. If you see someone running or drifting away from God’s will and ways you can know for certain that it will not turn out well for them. You don’t have to be a prophet; you need only believe God. Let’s apply this to our own lives. Is there an area of your life where you are knowingly not living in obedience to what God wants? Perhaps you think God is “pretty smart” and generally he knows what he is doing, but in this one thing you think you know better. You want to be happy and you think you know how to protect your own happiness but please think again. You will not do well if you try to live outside the will and ways of God. He is completely wise and what he wants for you, you should also want. Repent and return to God in every area of your life. If one part of your life begins to drift, soon all of your life will be drifting as well. Pay attention, don’t drift.
