Reflect:
Proverbs 11:11
11 Upright citizens are good for a city and make it prosper,
but the talk of the wicked tears it apart. (NLT)
This proverb contrasts the difference between the upright and the wicked. The wicked are those who love to stir the pot. Rather than working together for the good of the community, they seem to only want to poke holes in everything. You see this kind of stuff everywhere—the news, talk radio, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram.
Yet, wisdom calls us to emulate the upright and be people of high character. So, what does it look like for Christians to be upright citizens? How are we to operate in the day-to-day grind? How can we be a blessing in our community? The apostle Paul gives us some insight regarding how to do this. He writes:
“Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them. And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own, guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.” (Ephesians 4:29-32 NLT)
“Therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and dearly loved, put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a grievance against another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you are also to forgive. Above all, put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. And let the peace of Christ, to which you were also called in one body, rule your hearts. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell richly among you, in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another through psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (Colossians 3:12-17 CSB)
