Day 1 Psalm 107 Devotional

By November 7, 2016Daily Devotional

Pray:

Ask God to orient or reorient you to Himself. Confess any known sin. Thank Him for His forgiveness. Be still and reflect on Jesus and His sacrifice for you. Ask the Holy Spirit to open your heart and mind to God’s Word. Pray for others in your life that they, too, would know and love God today.

Read:

Psalm 107: 1-3

“Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His love endures forever.  2 Let the redeemed of the LORD say this — those He redeemed from the hand of the foe, 3 those He gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south.

Understand:

Psalm 107 is a psalm of praise. It celebrates Israel’s return from the Babylonian exile. The psalmist recalls how God redeemed His people from various locations and difficult situations. He’s calling us to corporately worship God. He wants us to remember: God’s covenant to His people, His faithfulness, His goodness, His love (“hesed” love: loyalty, kindness, full of grace and mercy) towards the redeemed, and His enduring kindness. The psalmist reminds us that God is faithful, despite our circumstances. God is a sure foundation for us to stand on. “Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His love endures forever.” Think of this verse as a confession of faith.

Apply:

This is good news for us! This news should cause us to break out in ceaseless gratitude because we are not left hopeless. We have a Redeemer who is faithful! We have the ultimate hope; a hope that will never fail.

Paul tells us in Romans 5:1-5, “We have been made right with God because of our faith. Now we have peace with Him because of our Lord Jesus Christ. Through faith in Jesus we have received God’s grace. In that grace we stand. We are full of joy because we expect to share in God’s glory. And that’s not all. We are full of joy even when we suffer. We know that our suffering gives us the strength to go on. The strength to go on produces character. Character produces hope. And hope will never let us down. God has poured His love into our hearts. He did it through the Holy Spirit, whom He has given to us.”

Despite what is going on around you today, you have reason to praise God; you have an everlasting hope! You are the redeemed of the Lord, so offer Him your praise today!

“Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His love endures forever.”

Live:

(Personalize this prayer today; make it specific to the circumstances that face you.)  Ask God to lead you through His Spirit as you go through your day. Ask Him to bring to mind the truth of the gospel and its implications for what you will encounter today. Tell Him “Yes” to His will and ask Him for His power and protection to live this “yes.” Ask God to create and reveal opportunities to proclaim the good news today. KEEP PRAYING THROUGHOUT YOUR DAY.
